Two teams from the PSAC West have been impressive week in and week out, and those two squads continued their dominance as 2014 came to a close for the PSAC hoops season.
Both Gannon and Slippery Rock went 3-0 last week and improved to 8-4 and 9-2, respectively.
Gannon is riding a six-game winning streak after beating East Stroudsburg, West Chester and Cheyney. The Golden Knights were led by senior Adam Blazek, who was also named the league’s Player of the Week in the West. Blazek had a season-high 30 points and six rebounds against Cheyney. At the break, Gannon is the only PSAC West team to not have a blemish on its PSAC record. The Knights are a perfect 7-0.
Slippery Rock also won all three of its games, beating Millersville, Shippensburg and Kutztown. Kelvin Goodman, the team’s leading scorer, averaged 14.7 points and 6.7 assists during the three wins. So far this season, SRU leads D2 in rebounding margin, grabbing 16.2 rebounds per game more than its opponents.
Performance of the Week:
– Gannon coach John T. Reilly won his 400th career game with a win over West Chester. The 22-year veteran is the 30th active coach in Division II to reach such a plateau. He’s the third active PSAC coach to win 400 games.
Other Notables:
– Cal’s Tony Richardson averaged 6.0 points and 4.7 rebounds for the Vulcans last week. He was named PSAC West Freshman of the Week.
– Slippery Rock’s Cornelius Brown scored 14 points and had 11 rebounds in a win over Kutztown.
– IUP’s Shaun Dyer had 23 points and six rebounds in a win over Mansfield.
– IUP’s Brandon Norfleet had 21 points, five rebounds and five assists in a win over Lock Haven.
– Mercyhurst’s Sean Beins had 24 points and six rebounds off of the bench in a win over Cheyney.
