While you are watching the NFL this season, it will have a bit of a different look. Especially after touchdowns.
The owners approved on Tuesday to move the distance of the extra point back from the two-yard line to the 15. The idea is that by snapping the ball from the 15-yard line will make PAT’s more challenging.
The approved rule was one of three proposals considered by owners Tuesday at the NFL’s Spring League Meeting.
Teams still have the option to go for a two-point conversion after scoring a touchdown, but the rules for that have been tweaked as well.
The ball will still be snapped from the two-yard line, but unlike in year’s past, the defense can now return a turnover to the other end zone for the two points, similar to the college rule.
As for moving the PAT back to the 15-yard line it shouldn’t have much impact.
NFL kickers made about 99 percent of their attempts when the ball was snapped from the two-yard line. In comparison, last season NFL kickers only missed a total of 27 attempts between 30 and 39 yards.
As for Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Shaun Suisham, the change shouldn’t affect him much. Suisham was a perfect 6-for-6 last year in kicks between 30-39 yards.
