Remember Andrew McCutchen’s rough start to the season? It looks like he’s well over that, as for the second time this year, he’s been named the National League Player of the Week.
It’s the sixth time that McCutchen has received the honor in his career.
McCutchen hit .563 during the week with eight RBI and seven runs. McCutchen added a steal and two home runs en route to the award. He last won the award in the end of May.
McCutchen capped off his stellar week by going 7-12 in the Pirates’ series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. McCutchen would hit a home run on Sunday to complete the sweep, leaving Dodgers’ starting pitcher Alex Wood impressed.
“I was surprised he swung at it, much less hit it out,” Wood said after the game to reporters. “He can do a lot of things a lot of people can’t.”
The Pirates sweep of the Dodgers was the first daunting task the team had to face, as it will take on the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets — two more division leaders — this week on the road.
The Pirates are currently trailing the Cardinals by 5 games and have a 3.5 lead in the wild card race.
