Good morning, Pittsburgh. Here’s your day in sports for Tuesday, October 27, 2015.
What’s on tap for today:
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and Penn State head coach James Franklin each have their weekly press conferences this afternoon. Tomlin’s 4-3 Steelers have a tall test as the unbeaten Cincinnati Bengals come to town next week. The 6-2 Nittany Lions, meanwhile, will host 4-3 Illinois as they return from a narrow victory over Maryland.
Pittsburgh headlines:
The fallout continues from the Steelers’ road loss at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Beat writer Gar Bercury has his weekly three up, three downreport card highlight the best and the worst of a bad result.
The Penguins (3-4-0) lost forward Bobby Farnham on waivers to the New Jersey Devils on Monday. Farnham, 26, had no points in 14 career games with the Penguins. The Pens visit the Washington Capitals tomorrow night.
The Pirates claimed pitcher Jorge Rondon on waivers from the Baltimore Orioles just one week after the Orioles claimed Vance Worley from the Pirates.
Wide receiver Tyler Boyd is one of three Pitt players to earn ACC player of the week honors after the Panthers last-second victory over Syracuse on Saturday.
This Thursday, when the Panthers host North Carolina at Heinz Field, they will honor College Football Hall of Fame inductee and former Pitt offensive lineman Ruben Brown.
On this date in 2001, Penn State quarterback Zach Mills set a school record with 418 passing yards and led the Nittany Lions to 20 unanswered points in a 29-27 come-from-behind victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes.
The victory was the 324th career win for Penn State head coach Joe Paterno, which moved him ahead of Bear Bryant for the all-time lead in wins for a major college head coach.
He said it: “We’ll move forward with Ben as we prepare this week.” — Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin on his starting quarterback for this Sunday.
