A crazy game that saw the Wild Things trailing 5-1 at one point, the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, came away with a 8-7 win on Saturday.
Third baseman Jovan Rosa had a monstrous day at the plate. He was 5-for-5 with three doubles, and a bases clearing triple in the top of the ninth.
In top of the tenth, Washington got the game winning run from a Darian Sandford single that scored former Miner Mario Mercedes.
Down 6-3 in the top of the ninth, Quincy Latimore singled with two outs scoring Scott Kalamar. The next batter Rosa, hit his triple to give him three of his four RBIs in the game.
The Miners came back in the bottom of the ninth, scoring on a double play ball off closer Jhonny Montoya (2-0) to send the game to extras.
Southern Illinois was able to plate five in the bottom of the fifth off starter Shawn Blackwell.
Washington got their first run of the game in the top of the fourth when second baseman Shain Stoner singled home Rosa.
The Wild Things scored once again in the next frame. Stolen base king Sandford scored on a sacrifice fly from Stewart Ijames, making it 5-2.
Rosa added his final double of the game in the top of the eighth, scoring CJ Beatty to cut the lead to 5-3.
Miner’s right fielder Stephen Riddle added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with a RBI double to finish the game at 6-3.
