* The following is an official game recap from the Washington Wild Things *
Washington,PA-The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, belted two homeruns in a four-run sixth to power over the Normal Cornbelters in a 6-1 victory on Monday at CONSOL Energy Park.
In the bottom of the second, an AJ Nunziato single, which skipped underneath the glove of the visiting left fielder, put the Wild Things on the board and gave them an early 2-0 lead over the Cornbelters.
Normal cut the lead in half 2-1 and scored their sole run of the game in the top of the sixth when Sanford walked Cornbelters SS T.J. Gavlik with bases loaded.
A one-run contest quickly turned into a lengthy lead for the Wild Things, as home runs by Washington’s fifth and seventh batter counted for all four runs in the sixth. With CJ Beatty on third (singled) and Quincy Latimore (doubled) on second, Mark Samuelson lifted the 0-1 pitch for a three-run homer to right, putting Washington ahead 5-1. Nunziato expanded the lead by five as he tattooed a solo shot, his fifth, for the second homerun of the inning for Washington.
Starter Shawn Sanford, who marks his father’s name on the mound before every outing, pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing three hits, zero runs, two walks and four strikeouts in his team-leading sixth win and the team’s 29th.
On a side note: Shortstop AJ Nunziato went 3-4 on the night with an RBI single, double, and a solo homerun, one triple shy of a Washington cycle.
