As the season winds down, the Pittsburgh Pirates find themselves battling for a Wild Card spot and possibly a division title. Going forward, it will take a team effort to push ahead. Jose Tabata showed this past week that he could be one of those guys to step up.
Tabata had a solid week, hitting .389 while driving in six runs for the Pirates. Let’s break down his week as the Pirates went 3-3 from Saturday to Friday.
9/14: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 Run, 1 RBI – Tabata’s solo shot tied the game at 1-1 in the 6th before Marlon Byrd homered in the 8th in the Pirates 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs
9/15: 1-4, 1 3B, 1 Run
9/16: 1-3
9/17: 0-1
9/19: 2-3, 1 2B, 2 Run, 3 RBI, 1 BB – Tabata’s 3 RBI’s helped the Pirates avoid a four-game sweep by the San Diego Padres
9/20: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 Run, 2 RBI
Six of Tabata’s 32 RBI’s and two of his six home runs for the season came this past week. The Pirates are hoping that guys like Tabata stay hot through October and aid guys like Byrd, Andrew McCutchen and Pedro Alvarez.
For his strong play, Tabata is this week’s Pirate of the Week.
