Good morning, Pittsburgh. Here’s your day in sports for Wednesday, October 21, 2015.
What’s on tap for today:
Pitt’s women’s basketball team is getting close to their run for a second consecutive NCAA tournament bid. Head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio is at ACC media day today in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Pittsburgh headlines:
The Penguins (3-3-0) evened their record and got the power play and captain Sidney Crosby both on the board in a big way in their 3-2 overtime victory overt the Florida Panthers.
The reconfigured power play was the big story of the day, and it paid off in a big way, scoring two goals for Mike Johnston’s squad.
The offseason has started for the Pirates, and Tuesday saw the Bucs lose pitcher Wilfredo Boscan and outfielder Gorkys Hernandez to free agency and pitcher Vance Worley on waivers to the Baltimore Orioles.
The Pitt men’s basketball team landed a big recruit, getting a commitment from junior college transfer Crisshawn Clark, a combo guard who will come in with three years of eligibility starting in 2016.
Washington & Jefferson’s Ryan Ruffing was named PAC offensive player of the week. That and more in our Division III notebook.
On this date in 1967, the Penguins record their first home victory in by beating the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2 at the Civic Arena. Right-winger Ken Schinkel (right) recorded a hat trick and Gene Ubriaco, who would later coach the Pens, also scored. The victory was not only the first for the Pens at home, it was the first win by a member of the NHL “second six” expansion teams over an “original six” opponent.
He said it: “it was nice to see that first one go in and hopefully I can build off of this one.” — Penguins captain Sidney Crosby on his first goal of the season.
