Pittsburgh headlines:
The Pirates 4-0 loss to Jake Arrieta and the Chicago Cubs last night ended their season at home in the Wild Card game for the second consecutive season.
Manager Clint Hurdle went with a defense-first lineup in the hopes of playing some small ball, but an early lead from the Cubs doomed his squad. The team’s other pre-game roster moves were more usual.
Last night’s matchup with the Cubs felt similar to the 2013 Wild Card game against the Reds, wrote our Andrew Hodgson. At least before the game, it did.
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has denied a report that he is targeting an Oct. 25 return from his MCL injury.
Despite a strong start on both sides of the ball, Pitt is having trouble developing secondary receiving threats beyond Tyler Boyd.
On this date in 1927, the New York Yankees beat the Pirates, 4-3, to sweep the World Series. Wilcy Moore threw a complete game for Yankees. Centerfielder Lloyd Waner went 3-for-4 with a run for the Pirates.
Lou Gehrig struck out with the go ahead run in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth to go 0-for-5 on the day, but Johnny Miljus threw a wild pitch, allowing Earle Combs to score and win the game for the Yanks.
