Pittsburgh headlines:
The Pirates, led by starter A.J. Burnett and left fielder Starling Marte, beat the Rockies 9-4 to lower their magic number to two.
Before the game, the Pirates made a transaction, calling up outfielder Keon Broxton and moving infielder Jung Ho Kanh to the 60-day disabled list. Broxton made his MLB debut as a pinch-runner, stole a base and scored a run.
After a breakout performance against the 49ers on Sunday, second-year Steelers linebacker is showing signs of becoming one of the team’s greats at the position.
Pitt wide receiver Tyler Boyd was named ACC Wide Receiver of the Week for his performance against Iowa on Saturday.
On this date in 1911, at Pittsburgh’s Forbes Field, Cy Young (right) and the Boston Rustlers shut to the Pirates 1-0. It was Young’s 511th and final career win. 20-game winner Babe Adams would take the loss for the Bucs.
He said it: “That’d be awesome if it could be.” — Penguins winger Bobby Farnham on if playing on the penalty kill could be a niche for him this season.
