For the fifth straight season, Pirates outfielder and former MVP Andrew McCutchen has been named to the National League All-Star team. On the season, McCutchen his hitting .296/.390/.493 with 10 home runs and 49 RBI despite a slow start to the season with a leg injury.
McCutchen ranks first on the team in on-base percentage and slugging, while his .296 average is second on the team to only Francisco Cervelli. McCutchen is a combined 2-8 in his four All-Star appearances, which includes starting and getting three at-bats in the 2014 mid-summer classic.
McCutchen becomes the first Pirates player to appear in five straight All-Star games since Roberto Clemente appeared in eight straight games from 1960 to 1967.
McCutchen, the team’s 2005 first-round pick, currently boasts a 2.7 WAR, which ties him for 16th in the National League with Justin Upton. McCutchen trails Paul Goldschmidt, Bryce Harper, Buster Posey, Brandon Crawford, Giancarlo Stanton, Todd Frazier, Nolan Arenado, A.J. Pollock, Anthony Rizzo, Joc Pederson, Justin Turner, Joey Votto, Dee Gordon, Joe Panik and Adrian Gonzalez in the category.
After hitting just .194 in the month of April, McCutchen has hit .330/.419/.566 and .337/.422/.511 in the months of May and June, respectively, with all of his stolen bases and seven of his 10 home runs coming during the latter months.
