Pittsburgh—For the third straight week, the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week award has gone to a Duquesne player. But this time, it’s not Derrick Colter. On December 31st, freshman forward Quevyn Winters was named co-Rookie of the Week along with Butler guard Kellen Dunham.
This year is only the 4th time in school history that two Dukes have won the award in the same season, but it is the first time this has happened in a 16-team league. Damian Saunders and Bill Clark were the last two Duquesne players to accomplish the feat, back in 2007-08.
Winters’ 14 point performance on 5 of 10 shooting in the 84-74 loss at Penn State earned him the award. He was instrumental in his team’s near-comeback late in the game, with 7 2nd half points and a 3-pointer to bring his team within five with 56 seconds remaining. Winters was 2 for 7 from 3-point range on the afternoon.
Winters, who played prep school basketball at M.A.C.K. Academy in North Carolina last year, has been giving Duquesne some quality minutes coming off the bench. He is 2nd on the team in 3-point field goals (23) and is averaging 8.6 points and 21.4 minutes per game. Winters recorded a double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds) in his first game ever as a Duke—the season-opener against Albany. He was also instrumental in Coach Ferry’s first win as head coach at Duquesne, the 90-88 overtime victory against James Madison on November 19th. Winters scored a season high 19 points in that game on 8 of 13 from the field.
Unfortunately Duquesne is inactive until January 9th when they play Fordham, so their Rookie of the Week streak must come to an end next week. However, with the amount of talented freshmen Duquesne has, expect the award to be back in the hands of a Duke come January or February.
