These days, it doesn't seem to matter who the Pittsburgh Penguins are missing they still find a way to win. Without Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, Brooks Orpik, Paul Martin, Rob Scuderi, Beau Bennett, James Neal, Deryk Engelland, and Tanner Glass, the Penguins defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1, Monday night at Consol Energy Center to move back on top of the Eastern Conference standings. Of course, the Pens still had Sidney Crosby. Crosby scored his 19th goal of the season with under ... Read More
PSAC West Hardwood Moment: Teams enjoying much needed time off
After starting the season with games aplenty, finals weeks around the PSAC West bring some much needed time off for teams to study and get practice in. With that, three of our PSAC West teams were in action this past week - Slippery Rock, Gannon and Clarion. Slippery Rock picked up an 80-41 wallop over Penn State New Kennsington. Mauric Lewis-Bridges led the way with 16 points and 6 rebounds. Tabari Perry posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Gannon went 1-1 in ... Read More
Steelers Week 15 Report Card
It took 15 weeks of the NFL season, but the Pittsburgh Steelers finally put together a complete effort in Sunday night's 30-20 victory over division rival Cincinnati Bengals. That was the case for the first half at least as the Steelers resembled a dominant team that forced mistakes and took advantage of them when they happened. While in the grand scheme of things their performance may have been a case of "too little, too late," in terms of their playoff chances, it was nice to see the ... Read More
Brown, Steelers Pummel First-Place Bengals
On a national stage and with the slimmest and unlikeliest of chances remaining to make the playoffs, the Pittsburgh Steelers (6-8) knocked off the AFC North division-leading Cincinnati Bengals (9-5) at Heinz Field. Before an announced crowd of just over 45,000, the smallest Steelers home crowd in the history of Heinz Field, the Steelers played brilliantly from the opening kickoff and looked perhaps better than they have all season, winning 30-20. Less than five minutes into the game, ... Read More
Players of the Week: North Catholic football team
Every now and then it's hard just to pick a single player for our player of the week. This week is another one of those cases. The North Catholic football team came from behind and won in overtime to put a stamp on a perfect 16-0 season with a PIAA Class A state championship Friday. North Catholic, led by P.J. Fulmore, was able to come back and beat Old Forge, 15-14, in a thrilling finish. Fulmore led his team into the overtime period and knew they needed a touchdown and a two-point ... Read More
Steelers-Bengals Preview
A playoff berth can be clinched at Heinz Field on Sunday night and, sadly for the Pittsburgh faithful, it is the division opponent in position for that accomplishment. The visiting Cincinnati Bengals (9-4) can clinch at least a Wild Card spot and possibly even win the AFC North title (with a Ravens loss or tie on Monday night) if they are victorious over the Steelers (5-8) in a primetime matchup. Cincinnati defeated Pittsburgh in a Week 2 Monday Night Football matchup on their home turf, by a ... Read More
Malkin Hurt; Pens Still Win
With their third straight win, and eighth in nine games, the Pittsburgh Penguins (23-10-1) defeated the Detroit Red Wings (15-10-9) on Saturday night. The Penguins won 4-1, with backup goalie Jeff Zatkoff in net, and handed Detroit its fourth consecutive loss. Unfortunately for the victors, these two points in the standings came at a significant cost. Evgeni Malkin was injured in the third period on a play in which he was also called for a holding penalty. Malkin was wrapped up with ... Read More
What happened to Wheaton and Moye?
Markus Wheaton was a highly-touted player in the 2013 NFL draft, as he is exactly the type of player the Steelers look for in a receiver; Quick, fast, great hands and a true playmaker. During his career at Oregon State, Wheaton had a break-out year in his senior season, recording 91 receptions good for 1,244 yards and 11 touchdowns. Heading into Week 15, Wheaton's numbers have been less than desirable as he has six receptions for 64 yards on the year. In Training camp, Wheaton was praised by ... Read More
Pens hold off Devils behind Marc-Andre Fleury
The Pittsburgh Penguins' skaters only showed up for one period of play on Friday night. Fortunately, their goaltender was available to play all three. Pittsburgh scored three goals in the first period then held on to defeat the New Jersey Devils 3-2 at Consol Energy Center. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 37 of 39 shots including a couple of ten-bell saves in the third period to preserve the one goal lead. Pascal Dupuis got the Penguins on the board right away with a goal less than a minute ... Read More
Looking at the careers of Bradshaw and Roethlisberger
The Pittsburgh Steelers have never been about one player who makes or breaks their team. Furthermore, the Steelers are a dynasty and are arguably the most successful franchise for the simple fact that they're a team. Two quarterbacks, Terry Bradshaw and Ben Roethlisberger, have led the Steelers franchise to greatness. I take a look back and forward at two men who had/ have amazing talent around them, but are still amazing in their own right. During the 70s, the Steelers were loaded with ... Read More
