For the first time in three seasons the Pitt football team won't be heading to Birmingham, Alabama for a bowl game. After three consecutive trips to the BBVA Compass Bowl, the Panthers will instead be spending Christmas in Detroit, Michigan, which isn't exactly the location they had in mind when the 2013 season began. The Panthers will take on MAC Conference representative Bowling Green in the Little Caesars Bowl, scheduled to be played December 26 at 6:00 p.m. at Ford Field, the home of ... Read More
Steelers lose post season hope
PITTSBURGH -- Once the Miami Dolphins got used to the snow, the Pittsburgh Steelers were no problem. Charles Clay caught two touchdowns, including a 12-yard pass from Ryan Tannehill with 2:53 remaining and the Miami Dolphins beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 34-28 on Sunday. Daniel Thomas ran for 105 yards and a score. His zig-zag 55-yard yard burst at snowy Heinz Field set up Clay's game-winner. Tannehill completed 20 of 33 passes for 201 yards and three scores for the Dolphins (7-6). Miami ... Read More
Duke of the Week: Derrick Colter
After a sluggish run to start the season, the Duquesne basketball team is looking to get back on track. They played only one game this past week, but they picked up a sound 94-88 victory over UMBC. In that victory, one guy stepped up big for the Dukes: Derrick Colter. Colter, who's averaging 12.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game this season but he went above and beyond those averages in the win over UMBC. The 5-foot-11 sophomore guard scored 20 points on 6 of 8 shooting from the ... Read More
Attention, Mr. Shero
The Pittsburgh Penguins across the board are a talented offensive minded squad built to beat opposing teams with speed, great transitional play and for the most part, superior talent. However, if and when the game turns ugly or physical as it did Saturday night against the Bruins, or last year in the playoffs, or the year before that against the Flyers, the Penguins are simply outmuscled. Attention, Mr. Shero. Enough is enough. This has to be your wake up call to go out and bring in a role ... Read More
Pens lose late; Orpik leaves on stretcher
The Pittsburgh Penguins lost more than just a hockey game, Saturday night. In the first period, Brooks Orpik was thrown to the ice and punched repeatedly in the head by Shawn Thornton. Orpik remained motionless on the ice and required a stretcher to leave the arena en route to a hospital. Penguins officials stated that Orpik was conscious and able to answer questions while in a Boston Hospital. With Rob Scuderi, Beau Bennett, and Paul Martin already on injured reserve, and Evgeni ... Steelers and Dolphins battle for Wildcard
A handful of intriguing storylines will play out Sunday at Heinz Field in a battle between two mediocre teams still, remarkably, very much in contention for an AFC playoff berth. The Pittsburgh Steelers (5-7) host the Miami Dolphins (6-6) in a Week 14 matchup that may determine which team will stay on the tail of the Baltimore Ravens (6-6) for the coveted Wild Card spot. A Steelers loss would all but eliminate them while a victory would move them ahead of Miami in the standings due to the ... Read More
Facing the Powerful San Jose Sharks
Facing the powerful San Jose Sharks, riding a six game winning streak and owners of the second best record in the Western Conference should have been tough task for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Instead, the challenge may have revealed a heart and character that has often been dormant. Maybe it was the return of pesky Chuck Kobasew after missing 17 games. Maybe it was a line-up, which was forced to rely on unheralded Jason Megna as a second line center and Andrew Ebbets and Chris Conner, two aging ... Read More
It’s Tabata’s time
The Pittsburgh Pirates find themselves in an unfamiliar position this offseason, not only because of the fact that they are coming off the first winning season and postseason appearance in 20 years, but also because the team’s needs are few and far between heading into 2014. However, one of the most glaring needs all year for the 2013 Bucs was a productive right fielder, as the players employed in the spot last year combined to put up some of the worst offensive numbers from the position of any ... Goodell vs. Pittsburgh: Vendetta?
If you let the vocal Steeler Nation tell the story, it would read that Roger Goodell and the NFL have a personal vendetta out against the Steelers, a storied program that has held prestige for so many years. But when you look at the facts, is it a vendetta? Or is it the fact that the NFL commissioner is simply holding the Steelers to a higher standard? Yes, there’s a difference between the two and I believe it’s the latter. To squash the misconception that the NFL holds a grudge against ... Read More
Pens score four in the second period to down Sharks
No Malkin? No problem. With the hottest scorer in the league out of the lineup with a lower body injury, the Pittsburgh Penguins destroyed the San Jose Sharks 5-1, Thursday night. The Sharks, boasting a 19-3-5 record and six consecutive victories, were shut down by Marc-Andre Fleury and allowed four goals in the opening seven and a half minutes of the second period. San Jose was strong early on, dominating zone time in the first half of the first period. But Fleury was up the task, ... Read More
