For decades, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been known for smash mouth football. There was one thing as Steeler fans we could always rely on and that was defense. Even when their offense would struggle as it has this year, Steeler fans always knew that their defense would keep them in games. In years past, when the Steelers offense would score 20-plus points, that would secure a "W" in the win column. Hall of famers such as Lack Lambert and "Mean" Joe Greene were staples in starting the ... Read More
Will A.J. Burnett STFD after season?
When A.J. Burnett came to the Pirates via a trade with the New York Yankees in February 2012, Pirates fans and those around Major League Baseball weren't sure what to expect. Would the Pirates be getting the Burnett who went 34-35 with a 4.79 ERA in three very tumultuous seasons with the Yankees, or would they get the pitcher who once led the National League in shutouts (2002) and once lead the American League in strikeouts (2008)? Things got off to a rocky start as Burnett hurt his cheek bone ... Read More
Steelers need to use bye week wisely
As the remainder of the NFL played yesterday and tonight, the Steelers sat and watched as they attempt to figure out what has gone wrong (or a tougher question: what has gone right?) with their 2013 season. The team sits in an unfamiliar place currently, that is to say, the cellar of the AFC North. They are 0-4 and are coming off of a heartbreaking defeat in London at the hands of the previously 0-3 Minnesota Vikings, in which Ben Roethlisberger fumbled near the goal line just as he was about to ... Pirates win Game 3 of NLDS, can win series tomorrow
Pedro Alvarez and the Pirates kept that Jolly Roger flapping high above Pittsburgh. Alvarez pulled a grounder into right field that scored pinch-runner Josh Harrison from second base. Russell Martin followed with a sharp RBI single against reliever Kevin Siegrist, who took over after Carlos Martinez (0-1) faltered. The ... Read More
Bucs look to carry momentum to Pittsburgh
As the Pittsburgh Pirates head into a Game 3 showdown with the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park today, they find themselves in a very rare position indeed. While many would still call the Bucs the underdogs against one of the most hallowed franchises in the history of baseball, they have the momentum going forward in this series, and could conceivably win the next two games to play for the NL pennant. The offense seems to be coming together at just the right time, as the team followed up the ... Read More

Crimson Hawk of the Week: Izzy Green
It was a rough week for most of the PSAC West, but not for IUP. The Crimson Hawks had a solid ground attack against winless Millersville Saturday, racking up 303 yards on the ground. A big part of that ground game was freshman running back Izzy Green. Green had 103 yards on 16 carries and two scores on the ground, averaging 6.3 yards per carry. With a good chunk of his action coming in the second half with the Hawks up big, Green took advantage. On his first scoring drive, Green had six ... Read More
Penguins roll over the Sabres 4-1
The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Buffalo Sabres 4-1 Saturday night, following the same plan that gave them their first win against the New Jersey Devils; strong defense and aggressive offense. Thanks to another strong performance by Marc-Andre Fleury, who stopped 20 of 21 shots, and goals from Sidney Crosby, Chuck Kobasew, Chris Kunitz and Craig Adams, the Penguins won for the second time in as many chances. The Penguins brought the 288th consecutive sellout crowd to their feet on a ... Read More
Waynesburg prevails over Thiel on Homecoming
WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The sunny skies and warm temperatures made a picture perfect setting for Saturday’s homecoming festivities at John F. Wiley Stadium. The first-quarter efforts of the Yellow Jackets were nearly as flawless, as the home team raced out to a 21-0 lead over visiting Thiel during the first 10 minutes of play. The Tomcats came back to make the game more interesting for the more than 2,000 people gathered at the stadium, but it was too little, too late, as the Jackets sent their fans ... Read More
Penn State falls hard in loss to Indiana
The Hoosiers (3-2, 1-0 Big Ten) capped their five-game home stand by ending a 16-game losing streak to the Nittany Lions (3-2, 0-1). It looked like Penn State might keep the streak alive after taking its first lead of the game on a 26-yard TD pass from Christian Hackenberg to Allen Robinson early in the third quarter. But Indiana answered with a scoring flurry. Tevin Coleman scored on a 44-yard run and Roberson scored on a 2-point conversion run. Roberson then added a 2-yard TD run early ... Read More
