The Pittsburgh Power (3-10) saw their playoff hopes all but evaporate in the wake of last week’s 50-35 loss to the Orlando Predators, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t something to keep playing for this season. The team would surely like to improve on last season’s 5-13 record and this week’s opponent is one the Power beat earlier in the year 46-43. This is a matchup that figures to help a struggling Power offense that has scored a combined 49 offensive points in their last two games. The New ... Read More

After getting swept yesterday in a double header, the Washington Wild Things came back Friday night and won both games of their second double header, 3-0 and 4-1 over the Frontier Greys. In game one, Zach LeBarron made his Washington Wild Things debut, and what a debut it was. LeBarron, who most recently came from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organization, tallied six strikeouts during his debut and looked in total control out on the mound. The Wild Things got things started in the ... Read More
All 22: Recognizing Stunts
Winning at the NFL level is all about tells. The tip offs in another team’s scheme. It’s the reason why coaches and players spend so much time in the film room and the payoff it brings when you discover them. In Week One of last year, the Steelers had opportunities to see one of the Broncos’ tells along the defensive line. They missed it, and it cost them. Above is the Steelers’ first pass of the game. 3rd and 14 completion to Mike Wallace. Straight four man rush from Denver. Very ... Read More

The Washington Wild Things have been on a skid as of late and their woes continued today as they dropped both games of their double-header to the Florence Freedom, 3-0 and 1-0. Pitt’s Steven Adams selected by OKC Thunder with 12th overall pick
Anyone that was still wondering if Pitt's Steven Adams made the right decision when he declared for the 2013 NBA Draft got their answer Thursday night. Yes he did. After one season as a Panther, the much heralded Adams turned himself into a lottery pick when the Oklahoma City Thunder selected him with the No. 12 overall pick. Innocent or Guilty; Why Guess Now?
Thank goodness for the legal system. If it wasn’t for it, Aaron Hernandez would be sentenced to life behind bars already. In the court of public opinion, he has already lost. The evidence given by the prosecutor in yesterday’s arraignment was shocking. Text messages around the time of the shooting. Absence of security footage from that night. A laundry list of items read off in the ten or so minutes that led the majority of fans to write Hernandez off as guilty. While that list is ... Read More
Penguins sign Chris Kunitz to a three-year extension
When Ray Shero acquired Chris Kunitz back in 2009, he envisioned a winger with the speed, skill and physicality necessary to play on the top line with Sidney Crosby. Four years later, it looks as though Kunitz will finish his career with the Pittsburgh Penguins, playing alongside Crosby for at least the next three years. The Penguins announced a contract extension of three years with Kunitz making $3.85 million annually. Signed as an undrafted free agent out of Ferris State by the Anaheim ... Read More
The Senior Player’s Championship Brings Pro Golf To The Area
As one of the new members contributing to Pittsburgh Sporting News, I wanted to make a splash with my first story. It is not easy trying to figure out what route I wanted to go. Then Saturday happened … The site is about Pittsburgh sports, and I am not one who likes to write about himself, but this is too good to pass up. We are talking odds of 12,500 to one good. I had my first ever Hole-in-One. It took place on No. 13 at Grove City Country Club. The hole is 160 yards and it was with a ... Read More
Determining the fifth starter for the Pirates
When AJ Burnett and Wandy Rodriguez went down with injuries, the general consensus around Pittsburgh was "uh oh". Instead, the Pittsburgh Pirates have gone on a tear, going 7-2 on a nine game road trip thanks to a six game winning streak. Now, Rodriguez and Burnett are close to returning, with Wandy already on a rehab assignment in AAA Indianapolis. He could be back within a week while Burnett's status is still unclear. Nevertheless, the Pirates should get both of these pitchers back ... Read More
Thomas Mayo embracing new opportunity in the NFL
Last season, Thomas Mayo had an opportunity to go from Cal U and make the Oakland Raiders' squad. Unfortunately he was released when the preseason came. After a brief stint in the Arena Football League, Mayo, again, finds himself on an NFL roster, this time with the New York Jets. Mayo was picked up by the Jets back in March, but was waived by the team in the beginning of May. Five days later, he was re-signed and has been working out with the team all summer. On his Twitter handle, Mayo ... Read More
