This game followed the same formula as most of the playoff games between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers, last season. The Penguins got up by two goals; the Flyers came back. There were double digit goal totals, as well as 48 penalty minutes and a few scraps along the way. But in the end, the beat went on for the Flyers, regardless of where each team was in the standings heading into the contest. Jakub Voracek scored a hat trick, including the game-winner with 1:31 left ... Read More
Could the Steelers land Stedman Bailey?
With Mike Wallace all but gone from the Steelers and Antonio Brown seemingly creating locker room problems, the Steelers' receivers are falling apart. With little to no cap room, it's doubtful that they will test the waters of free agency. And with bigger needs to worry about, they won't be taking a guy in the top two rounds. But when it comes time for the Steelers to pick up a wide receiver, a great one might still be left on the board. Stedman Bailey. I've personally watched Stedman Bailey ... Read More
Penguins should be buyers this year
The Pittsburgh Penguins are currently in first place in the Atlantic Division, and in second place in the Eastern Conference behind the Montreal Canadiens by only one point. The Penguins are playing good hockey and you might think that a trade is not necessary, but every team can get better. With the trade deadline only a little over a month away, teams are starting to decide whether or not they are going to make a move. Very few teams see themselves as sellers this year since the season is ... Read More
Could Steve Breaston return to Pittsburgh with the Steelers?
So far during the off-season I have mentioned multiple times that the Steelers may have to dip into free agency for a few players this off-season. One position that could use an upgrade is wide receiver; especially with Mike Wallace almost guaranteed to leave as a free agent. Today the Kansas City Chiefs release receiver Steve Breaston. Breaston played for Todd Haley in Arizona and then followed him to the Chiefs. He is a prototypical slot receiver and has return abilities as well. During the ... Read More
Snedden’s Take: A Yinzerific Look at the 2013 MLB Season
Every morning, the routine is the same. We wake up and peer out the window, fingers crossed, just hoping for a break in the dreariness of another Pittsburgh winter. We plan a few extra minutes to clear the new coating of snow and ice off of our cars before leaving for work, and in the meantime we stare at that covered grill and patio furniture in the garage- dreaming of summertime cook-outs. Staring out from the corner, a lonely lawnmower seems to be calling our name. We mumble a few ... Read More
Penguins should wait on making a deal
Last week, Pens GM Ray Shero was reportedly in attendance for the Colorado Avalanche/Minnesota Wild game. His interest in what is otherwise seen as an uninteresting game for the Pittsburgh Penguins, is purely a sign of scouting for a possible trade. The Penguins are rumored to be interested in Devin Setoguchi, as reported by Rob Rossi a few weeks ago, as well as Matt Cullen. Setoguchi is seen as a potential suitor for Sidney Crosby's wing while Cullen is nothing more than a 36 year old third ... Read More
NBA in Pittsburgh?
Our Michael Waterloo mentioned last week that David Stern listed Pittsburgh on a short list of cities that could possibly see an expansion team in its town. Our fans here at Pittsburgh Sporting News seem to be torn on the subject. But if we put our allegiances to hockey aside, would a professional basketball team succeed in the Steel City? Personally, I'm not a hockey fan. Now, I know I'm way against the norm here at The Yinzer and most of you probably are instatly closing this article, but ... Read More
One More Time: A Season of Unpredictability
Over the past 5 weeks the number 1 team in the country has lost each week. Countless other teams in the top 25 have been upset. They must be beaten up on each other right? Wrong, in the world of college basketball uncertainty and upsets are the only things constants. A last place team in conference beat the top team in the conference, done (TCU over Kansas). A team that previously lost to Columbia by double-digits beat 2 top-5 teams in one week, done (Villanova over Louisville and Syracuse). And ... Read More

Despite their worst loss of the season Saturday at Marquette, Jamie Dixon's Pitt Panthers remain one of the Top 20 teams in the nation. Pitt (20-6, 8-5) dropped from No. 16 down to No. 20 in the latest AP Poll, headed by the Indiana Hoosiers at the top spot for the second consecutive week. The Panthers are among six Big East Conference teams in the latest AP Poll, as Pitt is joined by No. 8 Syracuse, No. 10 Louisville, No. 11 Georgetown, No. 17 Marquette and No. 25 Notre Dame. Pitt promotes Matt House to defensive coordinator
Pitt Panthers head football coach Paul Chryst announced the filling of three open positions on his staff, including filling the hole of defensive coordinator. Defensive backs coach Matt House was promoted to the role of defensive coordinator, while Chryst hired veteran coach John Palermo as defensive ends and linebackers coach. He also announced that former Pitt defensive back Hank Poteat (1996-99) will join the staff as a graduate assistant and work with the cornerbacks. Last season, ... Read More
