Following a big win against Bethany on Saturday, W&J running back Ryan Ruffing was named the President’s Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Ruffing had 170 yards from scrimmage on 19 touches, rushing 17 times for 116 yards and three scores and catching two passes for 54 yards in Saturday’s 66-42 win over Bethany. The senior running back only played in the first half as W&J led 52-21 at the break. The 100-yard effort was the 14th time Ruffing has eclipsed the 100-yard ... Read More
Clarion moves into top 25 of national poll
Several games in PSAC West action came down to the final quarter this past week, beginning with a close battle on Thursday night. The division continues to take shape, the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. Clarion remains the only unbeaten team at the top of the list at 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the West. Clarion also entered this week's AFCA Poll at No. 25 while Slippery Rock moved to No. 15. The Golden Eagles are heading into some historic waters, not having had this kind of ... Read More
Steelers sign T Byron Stingily; Kelvin Beachum placed on IR
The Pittsburgh Steelers needed to make a roster move on Monday after starting offensive tackle Kelvin Beachum was lost for the season with a torn ACL. As expected Beachum was placed on injured-reserve and the Steelers brought in another tackle to take his place on the roster. Former Tennessee Titans tackle Byron Stingily was signed. Steelers offensive line coach Mike Munchak has familiarity with Stingily, having been his head coach for a couple of seasons. Stingily attended ... Read More
Pitt’s Chris Blewitt earns ACC honor
The Pitt Panthers have had at least one player honored by the ACC every week this season. After a big road victory at Georgia Tech to improve the Panthers to 5-1 on the season and vault them into the Top 25, that streak continued this week. Naturally it was the hero of Saturday’s game, placekicker Chris Blewitt who earned the honor, being named Atlantic Coast Conference’s Specialist of the Week. Blewitt converted all four of his extra point attempts and drilled a Pitt school record ... Read More
Steelers Report Card: Grading Week 6 win vs. Cardinals
Things looked bleak for the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday afternoon at Heinz Field until an unexpected hero emerged in a 25-13 victory against a very good Arizona Cardinals team. There was a lot to like about this performance as well as a lot not to like. I get into that in my weekly Steelers Report Card. Quarterbacks- Mike Vick continued his stretch of poor play and it’s hard to imagine him looking any worse, leaving the game with a total of six passing yards. He gets an F. Landry Jones ... Read More
Pitt Panthers crack AP Top 25
The Pittsburgh Panthers (5-1, 3-0 ACC) broke into the Associated Press Top 25 poll on Sunday, marking them as one of the nation's best Division I college football programs. Pitt's success under first-year head coach has been refreshing and surprising for a program that has consistently been stuck around six games and barely being bowl-eligible for a number of seasons and under a myriad of different head coaches. The Panthers (#25) defeated Georgia Tech in Atlanta on Saturday to remain ... Read More
No. 1 Ohio State tops Penn State, remains undefeated
The Penn State Nittany Lions (5-2, 2-1) fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes (7-0, 3-0) on Saturday night in Columbus by a final score of 38-10. Recap: Penn State drew first blood with a 33-yard field goal by freshman kicker Joey Julius. The Lions’ defense was steadfast through the first period, holding the Buckeyes to just 18 yards of total offense in their first three possessions. Saquon Barkley, who returned tonight after missing the last two games with an ankle injury, fought his way up the ... Read More
Pens pounce early, hold on for win
Evgeni Malkin and Olli Maatta scored unassisted goals within less than a minute of each other at 5:49 and 6:28 of the first period and it was just enough to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins (2-3-0, 4 pts) to victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs (1-4-1, 3 pts), 2-1 at Consol Energy Center on Saturday. Taking that early 2-0 lead, the Penguins offense went quiet against Leafs goalie Jonathan Bernier the rest of the way. Marc-Andre Fleury allowed a goal to Leo Kamarov at 13:09 of the first period, but ... Read More
Bryant big addition to Steelers offensive arsenal
In typical Pittsburgh Steelers (3-2) tradition, the defense rules and provides the team's greatest opportunity to prevail on most Sundays. In 2015, that trend is more balanced than ever before, dare I say even tipping towards the opposite. New defensive coordinator Keith Butler's squad has not been bad, let me make that clear. In fact, they have probably surprised most with the performance given through these first five weeks of the NFL season. But let's save a complimentary critique of what ... Read More
Kessel, Pens welcome Toronto
The Toronto Maple Leafs (1-2-1, 3 pts) are coming to Consol Energy Center Saturday night and, no surprise, all eyes are on former Leaf Phil Kessel. Kessel is one of the newest members of the Pittsburgh Penguins (1-3-0, 2 pts), who play a third consecutive home game and try to build on the first victory of the season. That came Thursday in a shutout win over Ottawa. A third Canadian squad comes to Pittsburgh in as many games as Toronto, also coming off a victory after a three-game losing ... Read More
