The Pitt Panthers have always been a team known for playing defense and this 2012-13 version of the Panthers is no exception to that rule. After holding the Providence Friars to 64 points in Pitt's 68-64 victory on Tuesday, the Panthers have held 19 of their 20 opponents on the season under 70 points. But while defense is still the backbone of Jamie Dixon's program, they still need a potent enough offense to win games. When it comes to scoring the basketball, Pitt's biggest strength is ... Times are Changing: The Evolution of NFL Offenses
Vince Lombardi famously said football comes down to blocking and tackling. But he never said what else the sport needed to have. The young playoff quarterbacks, Robert Griffin, Colin Kaepernick, and Russell Wilson have taken the league by storm. Each has their unique skill set and story but they and their offenses share a common thread. A peek at the new-look offense of the NFL. The schemes have been as equally unique to the NFL. Schemes as common as apples and oranges in a supermarket in ... Read More
The weekend sports review by The Pittsburgh Housewife
I had been waiting for this past weekend for 116 days, and it couldn't have gone better. On Saturday the Pittsburgh Penguins were in Philly for their FIRST game of the season. I hate the Cryers Flyers, so seeing the Pens leave with a 3-1 win over them was great... no - it was awesome. The fact that the awesome Marc-Andre Fleury is now the Pens most winning goaltender, ever, made that win even better. He has played in 424 games, 226 of those wins. Ah sweet, sweet victory. Then Sunday’s game ... Read More
Pitt’s road back to NCAA Tournament a matter of opinion
Jamie Dixon's Pitt Panthers have become accustomed to playing in March and other than last season's disappointing season which saw Pitt miss the NCAA Tournament for the first time in Dixon's tenure; they usually are assured a spot in the "Big Dance." That should hold true this season as well as baring a major collapse down the stretch, Pitt should be one of the 68 teams selected to compete for the National Championship. Sitting at 3-3 in the Big East, they will likely have to win seven more ... Read More

Pitt Recruit Updated to 5-Star
Dorian Johnson, the second best recruit at offensive tackle according to ESPN, is now considered a top-tier athlete. Rivals.com awarded him with a 5-star rating today. Johnson, the Belle Vernon, PA native, committed to Pitt over Ohio State back in November. Originally he was commited to Penn State but decommitted earlier in the season. Johnson stands 6'6" and weighs in at 285 pounds. Johnson has a lot of quickness even with his size. His biggest praise this off-season has been his footwork. ... Read More
Penguins cruise in 6-3 win over Rangers
Playing their second game in as many nights, the Pittsburgh Penguins started their new backup goalie, Tomas Vokoun. The Rangers ended the game with their backup in net. The Penguins scored six goals, including four against defending Vezina winner Henrik Lundqvist, en route to a 6-3 victory, Sunday night. Tyler Kennedy, Matt Niskanen, and Pascal Dupuis each scored, while James Neal registered two goals. Kris Letang added an empty net goal to seal the game. The Penguins chased Lundvist ... Read More
Pitt’s Trey Zeigler starting to earn Jamie Dixon’s trust
Trey Zeigler's first season as a member of the Pitt basketball program has been a roller coaster ride to say the least. The Central Michigan transfer, who averaged 15.8 points per game a season ago, was thought to provide an immediate scoring option off the bench for the Panthers this season. But things haven't exactly gone the way Zeigler probably thought they would as the junior is only averaging 5.1 points per game in barely over 15 minutes per game. He came out of the gates slow; ... Pens exact revenge on Flyers; open season with 3-1 win
Tyler Kennedy, James Neal, and Chris Kunitz each scored and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 26 shots as the Penguins beat the Flyers 3-1 Saturday in Philadelphia. Anyone expecting a matchup similar to the circus-like six game playoff series from April left very disappointed. Both teams had stretches of strong defensive play and both goaltenders, Marc-Andre Fleury and Ilya Bryzgalov, played well. Fleury, in particular, had an excellent game, bouncing back from a nightmare performance in the ... Read More

Picture a possible future Hall of Famer in McCutchen standing in center field and then look just a little bit to your left. There you'll find Starling Marte.
