Who are the real Steelers? Are they the 2-3 team that people were writing off and saying “this season is over already.” Or are they the 4-0 team that has the city believing again and the league talking about them. Let's be honest, the Steelers looked pretty bad through the first five games. They beat two teams that in retrospect are pretty terrible, the Eagles and Jets. Out of their losses, two were to dreadful teams, the Titans and Raiders. This version of the Steelers could have been 4-1 if ... Read More

Pitt’s Size Proving to Be Major Advantage
One thing that has been evident throughout the early season for Jamie Dixon’s Pitt Panthers is thy have had a size advantage on the inside and are willing to use it, especially on the defensive end of the floor. Dixon’s starting lineup features the 7’0” freshman Steven Adams at center and 6’9” Talib Zanna at the power forward spot, but 6’9” Dante Taylor has also logged major minutes at both the 4 and the 5 so far this season. Having three capable big bodies has paid dividends at both ends ... Read More
Zanna’s Improved Game a Big Reason for Pitt’s 3-0 Start
A big part of the 3-0 start for the Pitt Panthers has been the improved play of power forward Talib Zanna, who has been nothing short of outstanding through three games. Zanna, who has averaged 5.2 points per game throughout his collegiate career thus far, came out and set a career-high in the Panthers opener against Mount St. Mary’s, dropping 20 on the Mountaineers, a total he matched against Lehigh on Tuesday night. The scoring is great for a Pitt team that many felt could struggle scoring ... Read More
Open Letter to Big Ben
Dear Ben Roethlisberger, Let me first apologize for jinxing you and your offensive line with my previous article. I mistakenly touted your offensive line for being tough, gritty, effective for running the ball and protective of your life. Seeing as you sustained an injury that apparently threatened your life and your running backs only managed 77 total yards on 27 carries Monday night, it is clear I acted irrationally on giving the big guys up front "props". With that being said, let me ... Read More
Leftwich or Batch?
Charlie Batch was once a franchise quarterback. From 1998 to 2001, he started 46 games for the Detroit Lions. As a rookie, he handed off to Barry Sanders. In Batch’s first full season as a starter, he led the hapless Lions to the playoffs; it would be their last postseason appearance until 2011. Byron Leftwich was once a franchise quarterback. From 2003 to 2006, he started 44 games for the Jacksonville Jaguars. As a rookie, he took over as the starter for Mark Brunell, an original member of ... Read More
Road to Redemption: The Mike Danton Story
Conspiracy. Abuse. Murder. Three words that have no earthly business with hockey. Yet they were all inextricably woven together by one event, in a whirlwind that seemed better suited for a Hollywood movie than a playoff hockey headline. It was the case of Mike Danton, a young player just trying to get his start in the NHL. And it’s a story that reminds us all that the truth is often deeper than the first glance. It was April of 2004. The upstart San Jose Sharks had just ousted Danton’s St. ... Read More
James Robinson Aces Early Season Test For Panthers
Usually when a player finishes a game with a stat line that reads two points on 1-of-8 shooting, two assists and two rebounds, he is not going to be a hot topic of discussion during a postgame press conference. But that wasn't the case with Pitt freshman guard James Robinson. If you look at Robinson's line during Pitt's 78-53 win over Lehigh on Tuesday night in Preseason NIT action, you would think that Robinson didn't have a very good game. But just the opposite was true as the freshman ... Read More
Strong Second half Powers Pitt Past Lehigh
After blowout wins in their opening two games, Jamie Dixon’s Pitt Panthers were sure to be tested more by a very good Lehigh team. And tested they were. For a half. Led by Tray Woodall and Talib Zanna, the Panthers came out of the locker room smoking hot in the second half and turned a close game into a route, defeating the Mountain Hawks 78-53 in Preseason NIT action at the Petersen Events Center. “That’s a very good team,” Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon said. ‘I thought all 10 of us ... Pittsburgh Power add a few pieces to 2013 roster.
The Power have been somewhat quiet when it comes to AFL free agency, but they have added a few solid pieces to the core of the 2013 roster. Five year AFL veteran Neil Purvis will return for his third season with the Power. The 6’2” Defensive lineman from Virginia State should provide a solid pass rush up front. He has registered 4 sacks in his first two seasons with the Power but has also fought through various injuries. If he can stay healthy those numbers should improve. The bigger ... Read More
