After a week-long lull in the action, Duquesne (7-13, 0-6) will take on St. Bonaventure (9-10, 2-4) at the Reilly Center on Saturday. The Bonnies have also been idle for the past week and are coming off a 67-57 loss to Saint Louis. The game will be televised locally on Root Sports. St. Bonaventure, like Duquesne has had their share of troubles this season. After a 7-3 start, they fell victim to a six-game losing streak that began before Christmas and carried on into January. They were able to ... Read More
What Exactly is Happening with Duquesne?
The Dukes have lost their past eight games and ten of their past thirteen. Marhold, one of the senior leaders, has been benched for underperforming. The team’s two star players, Colter and Johnson were each held to two points last weekend at Dayton. So what is really going on with Duquesne? How can we account for the lengthy losing streak, the inability to finish games, and the inconsistencies from one half to the next? Perhaps it all boils down to the inexperience. But it is debatable as to ... Read More
Duquesne Falters in 2nd Half Once Again
Duquesne was able to open up a little bit of a lead on the road Saturday night against Dayton at University of Dayton Arena. But Dayton went on a 17-4 run in the remainder of the half to take a 30-24 halftime lead. The home team then went on an 11-2 run to start the 2nd half to gain a 41-26 advantage. The losing streak continues for Duquesne, who has now lost eight in a row. Credit ... Read More
Dukes Feeling Down After 73-64 Loss to Saint Louis
Pittsburgh—The game was much closer than what the scoreboard read after the final buzzer. On defense, Duquesne took measures to slow down the 3-point shooting of the Billikens’ guards, Kwamain Mitchell and Mike McCall. For the most part, they succeeded. However, free throws and turnovers ultimately were responsible for the Dukes’ seventh straight defeat. “That was a tough loss, our guys are really down right now,” Coach Ferry admitted. Duquesne guarded well on defense until the final minutes ... Read More
Sport Isn’t Always About the “Better Team”
Each sport has its defining characteristics that set it apart from other sports. But one of the things that all sports have in common is the fact that they can’t be predicted. That’s why they play the game, because anything can happen. There may be a favorite and an underdog, but any team has a chance to win on any given night. Did the LA Kings win the Stanley Cup last year by being the best team in the NHL? I don’t believe so. But they sure were able to put things together once the playoffs ... Read More
Graham, VCU Bury Dukes 90-63
Pittsburgh—Forget the VCU Rams, Duquesne barely outplayed Treveon Graham in the 1st half Saturday night. Graham had 17 points in the first half, almost surpassing Duquesne’s 18. The game was as good as over by the time the teams headed into the locker room. It was a night of milestones for #22 (AP) VCU. Not only did the Rams pick up their 13th straight win, but they also broke the record for most points scored by a college basketball team at Consol Energy Center. In addition, Coach Shaka ... Dukes to Face Off Against Most Formidable Opponent Yet
Duquesne is facing off against its first ranked opponent of the season Saturday night at the Consol Energy Center. #22 Virginia Commonwealth (15-3, 3-0), who topped Saint Joseph’s 92-86 in overtime Thursday night, will come to Pittsburgh seeking a 13th straight win. Their current win streak is 2nd longest in the nation. The Rams have faced a respectable cadre of opponents this season. They are 1-2 against teams currently in the Top 25. Their quality wins have come against #19 Memphis, Dayton ... Read More
Duquesne Falls 79-66 to UMASS, Despite Career-High From Johnson
It was truly a tale of two halves. UMASS led by as many as 17 late in the first half, but saw their lead cut to three on three separate occasions in the 2nd. Against a strong UMASS team, it wasn’t enough to pull out a victory. The Dukes just dug themselves into a hole too early. Just like in the Saint Joseph’s game, Duquesne came out with a head of steam in the 2nd half. Sean Johnson led this charge, scoring 14 points in the first 4:10 of the 2nd half. 4 of these points came off of a 4-point ... Read More
Hope to be Found for Duquesne in Loss to Saint Joseph’s
Pittsburgh—Picking up a fourth straight loss always hurts. But Duquesne showed some good things against Saint Joseph’s that might inspire some hope at this low point in Duquesne’s season. Regardless of any positives, there is still much basketball left to play this season. Last Saturday, Duquesne rebounded well against a talented team with size. The scoring sheet was also more balanced, indicating they are not relying on a few individuals anymore to get things done. It is important that these ... Read More
Duquesne Falls Prey to Hawks, 74-66
Pittsburgh—Atlantic 10 preseason favorite Saint Joseph’s didn’t leave the Palumbo Center without a fight Saturday night. That was because the right Duquesne team showed up to play—the Duquesne from before Christmas break. The Dukes didn’t always play soundly throughout the night, but they were aggressive. “If we play like this, and play this hard, we’ll win some games in this league,” Coach Ferry said after the game. Unfortunately, Duquesne’s efforts weren’t fruitful. They did, however, ... Read More
