Pittsburgh—Does anyone remember the 2004 Saint Joseph’s team? The team that went 27-0 in the regular season and came within a single basket of making the Final Four? Surely fans who have followed the Atlantic-10 in the past decade or so have heard of them, because they were one of the finest teams the conference has seen in the past decade. Well the word on Hawk Hill is that this year's Saint Joe's team is the best they have seen since that remarkable ’04 group. Quite a lofty claim, and quite an ... Read More
Dukes Drop 3rd Straight Game
Bronx, N.Y.—The Rams matched their season-best point total as they beat the Duquesne Dukes 82-75. Fordham’s Chris Gaston had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Branden Frazier added 16 points and a career-high 13 assists. Derrick Colter was the game’s 2nd leading scorer with 17 points, also recording 9 assists. Pantophlet had 13 and Johnson racked up 12, but it wasn’t enough to stay close to the Rams. Fordham was able to go into the locker room with a respectable halftime ... Read More
2012-2013: A Step Forward or Backward For Duquesne So Far?
Pittsburgh—In sports, you can’t ignore the numbers. And when you look at the two numbers that matter most for Duquesne (the wins and losses column) it is no secret that the Dukes were enjoying more success on the court at this time last year than they are now. At the end of non-conference play last year, Duquesne was 9-5. Right now they are 7-7 and staring some tough conference competition in the face. However, when it comes to whether or not this season has been a step forward or backward ... Read More
Tip-off Event to Engage Community and Increase School Spirit at Duquesne
Pittsburgh—When a student body is united, it says a lot about a university. When it comes to college basketball, student support cannot win games—but it can help. Why has Pitt only lost twenty games at the Petersen Events Center? They have had strong fan support, starting with the Oakland Zoo. Of the many successful basketball programs in the NCAA, the best programs are the ones with great fan support. Every athletic department in the nation who cares at all about basketball should be trying to ... Read More
Another Duke Earns Rookie of the Week Honors
Pittsburgh—For the third straight week, the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week award has gone to a Duquesne player. But this time, it’s not Derrick Colter. On December 31st, freshman forward Quevyn Winters was named co-Rookie of the Week along with Butler guard Kellen Dunham. This year is only the 4th time in school history that two Dukes have won the award in the same season, but it is the first time this has happened in a 16-team league. Damian Saunders and Bill Clark were the last two Duquesne ... Read More
Things Won’t Get Any Easier For Duquesne As Atlantic 10 Play Draws Near
Pittsburgh—Duquesne ended 2012 in disappointing fashion with two straight double-digit road losses to UL-Lafayette and Penn State. It all came after a convincing 71-66 win over a talented Western Michigan team that is picked to finish high in the MAC. This has more or less been the story of the season thus far for the Dukes—some fantastic ups, and some tough downs. Coach Ferry did say in the beginning of the season that every step forward may be followed by two steps backward. So far that is ... Read More
Late Run Falls Short, Duquesne Drops 2nd Straight Game
University Park, PA—Coach Ferry was expecting all coaches and players back on campus by Wednesday so the team could get at least two days of solid practice in before the Penn State game Saturday night. But you can’t control Mother Nature. Due to the massive amounts of snow the East Coast received in the days after Christmas, some players and staff weren’t able to get back to campus until late Thursday. It was really tough to say though, whether Duquesne’s 84-74 loss to Penn State had a lot to do ... Read More
Duquesne Needs Big Men to Step Up
Pittsburgh—“It’s time” is all Coach Ferry needed to say to Andre Marhold to get him going December 8th against New Orleans. Marhold scored 14 points in that game, his first double-figure performance of the season—and his only one to date. The 6-6 senior forward has been decent on the glass, pulling down at least four rebounds in all but three games. Decent, however, isn’t what the team needs though. They need reliable. Now, Andre really isn’t the biggest stats guy. He said so himself after ... Read More
Duquesne’s Colter Earns 2nd Straight Rookie of the Week Award
Pittsburgh—On December 24th, Derrick Colter became the first Duquesne basketball player to be named outright A-10 Rookie of the Week in back-to-back weeks since Robert Mitchell back in 2007. What a fantastic Christmas present for the 5-11, 175 pound freshman point guard. In his two games last week, against Western Michigan and UL-Lafayette, Colter averaged 25.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists, surpassing his points per game average from the previous week by eleven points. His team has ... Read More
2nd Half Haunts Duquesne Again On the Road
Lafayette—The first half went down in familiar fashion Saturday night for Duquesne. The Dukes shot well from behind the arc (6 for 11) thanks to Sean Johnson and Jeremiah Jones, who each had two threes apiece. They also played sound defense, holding their opponents to 33 points on 42% shooting. Derrick Colter put up another stellar performance, tying his career-high in points with 25. Following Colter’s lead, Johnson put up 16 points, while Jeremiah Jones scored 12. Unfortunately, these ... Read More
