After an extra inning game against the St. Louis Cardinals Saturday night, the Pittsburgh Pirates have elected to call up another arm for the bullpen selecting Wilfredo Boscan.
This is Boscan’s second time up with the Pirates this season, however he did not make any appearances the first time, which he was also brought up because of reliever usage.
Steve Lombardozzi’s name was not listed on Sunday night’s lineup card meaning he is the corresponding move. Lombardozzi was 0-for-10 in game action with the team this season.
With both Deolis Guerra and Vance Worley unavailable in the Pirates bullpen, Hurdle elected to make this move.
“It was his scheduled day to start and he can throw 100 pitches,” manager Clint Hurdle said of the decision to select Boscan. “We want someone with the most volume of pitches available. He has plenty to bring and we did not want to get caught one pitcher short tonight based on last night.”
On the season, Boscan has a 6-3 record with a 3.87 ERA. In a recent press conference, Pirates General Manager Neal Huntington stated that Boscan was one of several depth options in place when discussing injuries to the team’s pitching depth.
Hurdle did also state that Jeff Locke would be the lone starter available in Sunday’s game if it comes down to that.
