There is more news in the Steve Breaston to the Steelers rumors. According to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Breaston’s agent and the Steelers will talk during the NFL Combine about the possibility of Breaston playing for Todd Haley on their third team. According to 93.7 the Fan in Pittsburgh there is a mutual interest between the Steelers and Steve Breaston. So this report for Bouchette confirms that from the Steelers side of things.
Breaston, a Pittsburgh native, played for Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley in Arizona and Kansas City and had some of his most successful play come under Haley. However, after Haley departed last season and became the Steelers new offensive coordinator Breaston fell out of favor. Multiple times last season Breaston was a healthy inactive.
Last season Breaston had the worst season of his career statistically and caught only seven passes. When it was announced that the Kansas City Chiefs had released Breaston this week he immediately became a very real possibility for the Steelers. Pittsburgh is looking for receiver depth with the impending loss of Mike Wallace. Wallace’s departure leaves the Steelers with only three real options at receiver with Antonio Brown, Emmanuel Sanders and Jerrico Cotchery.
Breaston would add experience to the receiving core and also has return abilities. Brown and Sanders can also return kicks, but with Sanders foot injuries and Brown becoming the number one receiver it would be better to keep them out of the return game.
