The Pittsburgh Penguins have fired Penguins General Manager, Ray Shero. Despite of helping build a team that made consecutive Stanley Cup appearances in 08-09′, and being named the NHL GM of the Year just last season, the Penguins have struggled to find playoff success since winning the Stanley Cup in 2009.
There is speculation that Dan Bylsma will be next to go, but no announcement has been made at this time. According to Chris Peters from CBS Sports, the new GM will determine Bylsma’s future.
It might be Shero’s decision to stick with Bylsma after last season’s loss to the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference Final that led to his demise, but other moves have also hurt Shero’s cause.
Some will make note of Shero’s affinity for stockpiling puck moving defensemen while having little talent in the pipeline at forward, as something that has hurt the Penguins a great deal of late.
Others will point to trades that no only took away assets and high draft picks, but did not work out come playoff time. Deals for players like Brenden Morrow and Jerome Iginla being two of the most obvious.
Either way, a GM considered to have incredible job security is now out, and it will be interesting to see what comes next.
