Duquesne was held to under 50 points for the third time this season in their loss Tuesday night to No. 15 Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Dukes were outplayed on both sides of the ball by a well-balanced and disciplined Butler team.
The loss marks the end of Duquesne’s string of three games in six days, which began with their first Atlantic 10 win at Temple. They will have three full days to recover before playing host to St. Bonaventure at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
Duquesne (8-18, 1-11) was led in scoring by Derrick Colter, who had 11 points. Jerry Jones had nine points and also led the team with five rebounds. Butler (22-5, 9-3) cruised to victory while holding Duquesne to 37.3 percent from the floor. The Bulldogs shot 43.6 percent on the night.
Colter, who shot 3 of 6 from 3-point range, was responsible for three of the Dukes’ five 3-point field goals on the night. Each team attempted 21 3-pointers – the difference was that the Bulldongs were made 10 of them. Rotnei Clarke, who scored 16 points, shot 4 of 8 from beyond the arc. Ellen Dunham made 3 of 5 3-pointers off the bench and finished with 11 points. Khyle Marshall finished with 14.
Andre Marhold for Duquesne recorded five blocks in just 15 minutes of play but was only able to score 2 points. He split court time with Mamadou Datt.
Duquesne committed 10 turnovers to their opponents’ eight, but Butler was able to turn Duquesne’s turnovers into 10 points. The Dukes failed to find an answer to Butler’s methodical yet effective scoring attack throughout the game.
Duquesne’s home game this Saturday will be a black out game. All fans in attendance will receive a black t-shirt as the Dukes take the court in black uniforms for the first time.
