In the Past 24 hours, the Cardinals have traded for two starting pitchers in Justin Masterson and John Lackey while the Pirates look for their first acquisition.
Masterson was 4-6 with a 5.51 ERA in 19 starts for the Indians this year while posting a 1.653 WHIP and striking out 93. He hasn’t made a start since July 7th due to a sore knee, but will start Saturday against the Brewers.
Lackey was 11-7 with a 3.60 ERA in 21 starts for the Red Sox while posting a 1.231 WHIP and striking out 116. The Red Sox recieved SP Joe Kelly — who was 4-2 with a 3.13 ERA against the Pirates — and OF Allen Craig — who was a career .291 hitter against the Pirates with 6 home runs and 32 RBI.
The Cardinals still need help on the offensive side, but have bolstered their rotation which has been banged up this season.
The Pirates, on the other hand, are still actively searching for their first trade of the deadline. Bullpen and rotation help have been the main theme for them, so far.
