Pitt Panthers’ head coach Paul Chryst settled on a starting quarterback on Thursday and to no one’s surprise that man is sophomore Chad Voytik.
Voytik is a guy who was highly touted when he committed to Pitt and many Pitt fans are excited to see him under center. After Tom Savage moved onto the NFL, this job was Voytik’s to lose and throughout training camp he didn’t do anything to let the job slip away.
He played in four games as a backup to Savage last season, completing 6-of-111 passes for 116 yards.
But his play in the second half of Pitt’s 30-27 win over Bowling Green in the Little Caesars Bowl, is a cause for excitement.
Voytik took the majority of the reps with the first team during a scrimmage over the weekend and has been running with the starters most of camp.
There will be some growing pains for the young Voytik, mostly learning to play in a more traditional offense after spending much of his time in high school working out of the spread.
Yet his ability to make things happen with his feet should be big for the Panthers as it should not only help the skilled players out, but the offensive line as well.
The Panthers, who were 7-6 last season, open the 2014 season against Delaware on Aug. 30.
