Clint Barmes has been placed on the 15-day DL with a left groin strain (retroactive to 6/30). Michael Martinez has been recalled from AAA Indianapolis.
Bill Brink of the PG reports the injury is serious, but doesn’t require surgery.
MRI showed groin pulled off the bone, Barmes said. No surgery, but out 4-6 weeks. #Pirates just made move official.

In 42 games with the Pirates this season, Barmes has posted a .239/.284/.604 split with four doubles and four RBI. Most of his at bats have come off the bench with the exception of last month when he spent time at 2B and SS when Neil Walker was on the DL. Martinez has posted a .252/.322/.625 split in AAA with six doubles, five triples, one home run and 29 RBI in 79 games with Indianapolis. Martinez will back up Jordy Mercer and come off the bench.
