The Robert Morris Colonials men’s hockey team has announced that Kody Van Rentergem will be promoted to assistant coach for the 2015-16 season.
He will replace departed associate head coach Matt Nicholson, who left to become the head coach of the NAHL’s Amarillo Bulls in July. Former assistant coach Mark Workman was promoted to associated head coach earlier this offseason.
Van Rentergem, 28, has spent the past two seasons as the team’s hockey operations coordinator. In that span, the Colonials have had their most success as a program, winning the Atlantic Hockey tournament and the school’s first NCAA tournament berth in 2013-14 and securing their first Atlantic Hockey regular season title in 2014-15.
His roles included breaking down video, working on special projects for head coach Derek Schooley, and instructing the team’s goaltenders.
Before that, he was an assistant coach at Division-III SUNY Fredonia, his alma mater. He was an economics major and played goaltender for the Blue Devils from 2008 to 2012, amassing a .914 save percentage and a 2.77 goals-against average in 27 career games.
Before his collegiate career, he played for the Brooks Bandits of the Alberta Junior Hockey League and the La Ronge Ice Wolves of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. Van Rentergem is a native of Leduc, Alberta.
