The Pittsburgh Steelers made it clear before training camp began that they would not be extending the contract of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
That doesn’t mean they aren’t done taking care of their own though.
It looks like cornerback Cortez Allen may be the next in line for an extension as it looks like Allen has become priority No. 1 for the Steelers front office.
Allen is in the final year of his rookie contract, and with next to no up and coming talent on the corners, it makes sense that the Steelers would want to get something done soon.
Throw in the fact that it has long been the Steelers policy to not negotiate contracts during the regular season and the organization almost doesn’t have a choice but to get something done in the next few weeks.
They also probably learned a valuable lesson by allowing Keenan Lewis to enter the final year of his contract without an extension as he parlayed a successful 2012 season into a big deal with the New Orleans Saints.
The Steelers currently sit $6.5 million under the salary cap for the upcoming season, so they have plenty of room to get something done with Allen.
After recording 55 tackles and 10 passes defended in 2012, Allen had 51 tackles and 13 passes defended in his third season in the league last season and many feel he could be ready for a breakout season in 2014.
