The upcoming offseason will be one filled with questions for the Pittsburgh Penguins and general manager Jim Rutherford, but we do have the answer to one question regarding one of their upcoming free agents.
According to the Post Gazette’s Dave Molinari, the Penguins have informed winger Craig Adams that he will not be re-signed during the offseason.
The 38-year old Adams is an unrestricted free agent and was pretty much a longshot to return for the 2015-16 campaign anyway.
While in Pittsburgh Adams did serve as a reliable penalty killer for most of his Penguins career and had a modest salary of only $700k last season.
Adams spent the past seven seasons in Pittsburgh where he played in 453 games, scoring a total of 18 goals to go with 53 assists. He was a minus-34 during that span.
It’s likely that Adams elects to retire rather than sign with another organization.
Adams is just one of many decisions that Rutherford will have to make going forward as he will have to make decisions on eight unrestricted free agents. That list includes: forwards Blake Comeau, Maxim Lapierre, Steve Downie and Daniel Winnik, defensemen Paul Martin, Taylor Chorney and Christian Ehrhoff, and goalie Thomas Greiss.
All eight of those UFA’s can hit the open market beginning July 1.
