Sidney Crosby, who went from 129th overall in scoring to third, has been the core of the Pittsburgh Penguins turning their season around. It was announced today that he was elected as team MVP and deservedly so. When coach Mike Sullivan’s reign began, Crosby ignited and is currently the NHL’s leading scorer since then with 62 points (25 G, 37 A).
The ability for Crosby to not only score, but to pass the puck and set up his teammates is invaluable. He has come up big game after game and has not taken a day off since the being challenged by Sullivan. In March alone, the captain combined for 21 points and was named the NHL’s first star for that month.
The past 10 games without Evgeni Malkin has been somewhat of a surprise. During Malkin’s first long injury, the team struggled and couldn’t find any momentum. This time around, however, has been a completely different story.
Pittsburgh has flattened their opponents recently and with Crosby leading the charge, the Penguins have dismantled teams who are still fighting for their seasons.
Earlier this week the Pittsburgh Penguins also announced other team awards for players who have been a reason for their success this season.
These awards include:
Masterton Trophy nominee – Pascal Dupuis
Edward J. DeBartolo Memorial Community Service Award – Sidney Crosby
Rookie of the Year – Bryan Rust
Defensive Player of the Year – Kris Letang
Players’ Player Award – Marc-Andre Fleury
