The night was filled with many outstanding goals, but the most impressive achievement had to have been Sidney Crosby assisting five out of the six total goals scored on Saturday night’s game against the Buffalo Sabres. Winning 6-1 against the Sabres, takes the Penguins winning streak up to seven games in a row.
The game started off with Kris Letang scoring within the first minute of the period. He then went on to scoring another goal and two assists in the game.
As he said in his post game interview, “Every NHL player has a chance to win every night… Every night we focus on ourselves and what we have to do.”
This mentality seemed to continue throughout the game. Crosby assisted not only Letang’s goal but, Patric Hornqvist’s as well, who scored two of the six goals both on power plays.
Robert Bortuzzo‘s goal was assisted primarily by Sidney Crosby at 14:00 in the second period. This was the fourth five-point game of Crosby’s career, and the third with five assists.
After the first period the Pens started back with 3-0 lead, with goals from Letang and Hornqvist. They were at a disadvantage, though, as Evgeni Malkin was in the penalty box for a hooking call. This didn’t stop them though.
Hornqvist went on to score the fourth goal in another power play giving the Penguins a 4-0 lead. Bortuzzo in this period at 14:01 ending up scoring his first goal of the season making the Penguins lead 5-0.
But the Sabres fought back and Zemgus Girgensons scored his third goal at 16:52 of the second to make it 5-1. This ended Marc-Andre Fleury’s shutout record against the Sabres.
Evgeni Malkin’s goal came with 45 seconds left in the second, putting them ahead at 6-1. He was assisted by Blake Comeau and Letang, making a wrist shot through Sabres goalie Jhonas Enroth. This sealed the deal giving them the win.
Jhonas Enroth ended the game with 32 saves on goal.
The Penguins now have 37 successful penalty kills in a row after this game. They were three for three on the penalty kill in Saturday’s game.
This game made five consecutive games won against the Sabres outscoring them 23-3. Letang is now tied again with his career-high of scoring four points in a game.
The stars of the game were Crosby, Letang and Hornqvist. They all scored or assisted multiple times in the game Saturday night and showed top performances.
But as Hornqvist said in his post-game interview, “It doesn’t matter who scores and who doesn’t. We need to stick together if this is going to be a good season.”
Sidney Crosby’s post-game interview seemed to wrap up the night in a whole saying, “Tonight guys made the most of some opportunities…Tonight guys made it look easy on a few of those.”
The Penguins hope to continue their streak as they travel to face the New York Rangers on Tuesday at 7:00 PM on Root Sports.
