The Yankees seemed powerless as they only put one run on two hits against Max Scherzer and Co. as the Tiger pitching staff dominated the Bronx Bombers throughout the series. As for the AL Champs, they finally found their swing as they threw out eight runs on sixteen hits in the clincher against Yankeea ace, CC Sabathia.
The Tigers got a run on the board in the first and third innings thanks to RBI singles by Delmon Young and Avisail Garcia. They would then put the game out of reach in the fourth when Miguel Cabrera and Jhonny Peralta both hit two-run shots into the left field seats to make the game 6-0.
The Yankees would get their offense in the sixth. Nick Swisher would follow an Eduardo Nunez triple with a one out double to make it 6-1. Robinson Cano would then ground out and Mark Teixeira would walk setting up first and third with two out. Alex Rodriguez would then pinch hit, in his first at-bat since game 2, and fly out to end the threat. A-Rod would finish the series going 1 – 19 with 3 strikeouts.
The Tigers would finish the scoring with homers from Austin Jackson in the seventh and Jhonny Peralta’s second of the game in the eighth. The Tiger trio of Drew Smyly, Octavio Dotel, and Phil Coke would pitch 3 1/3 no hit innings to end the game and the series.
The Tigers will now wait to see where they will travel to for games one and two of the World Series starting Wednesday night either in St. Louis or San Fransisco. Justin Verlander will get the start (3 – 0 0.74 ERA).
Delmon Young (.353 AVG, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 3 R) was named ALCS MVP as he had the go ahead hits in all four LCS games for the Tigers. “Unbelievable,” Manager Jim Leyland said to MLB.com. “He got hot again this year at the right time for us. He stepped it up under the big lights. Not that they aren’t bright all year, but they are a little brighter this time of year.”
