After a sluggish run to start the season, the Duquesne basketball team is looking to get back on track. They played only one game this past week, but they picked up a sound 94-88 victory over UMBC. In that victory, one guy stepped up big for the Dukes: Derrick Colter.
Colter, who’s averaging 12.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game this season but he went above and beyond those averages in the win over UMBC.
The 5-foot-11 sophomore guard scored 20 points on 6 of 8 shooting from the field in 25 minutes of play. He hit 3 of 4 three pointers and shot 5 of 7 from the charity stripe. He also dished out 7 assists and grabbed 3 boards while coming up with 4 steals in the win.
Colter headed a strong 13-2 run to start the second half with a three-point play then later capped off a 9-0 run with a layup en route to the victory. Fifteen of his 20 points came in the second half.
The 20-point game marks the second time this season he’s scored 20+ points. His three rebounds marked the third time this season he’s pulled down 3 or more rebounds. And the 7 assists and 4 steals were season-highs for Colter. His 75 percent shooting percentage is also the highest shooting performance for the sophomore this season.
