Duquesne picked up its first win in almost two months Thursday night over Temple at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia. Andre Marhold finished with a career high 15 rebounds and Derrick Colter hit a pair of free throws with 2.9 seconds left to give the Dukes a narrow victory.
This was the first time Duquesne (8-16, 1-9) beat Temple (16-8, 5-5) at the Liacouras Center. Both teams held large leads during the game. Duquesne held an 11 point lead midway through the first half, while Temple held an eight point lead at the beginning of the second half.
Quevyn Winters did not miss a shot (6 of 6) in the first half and was able to help give Duquesne an early advantage. The Dukes went cold as the second half got underway and missed nine of its first 10 shots en route to a 54-46 Owl advantage. Duquesne responded with a 9-0 run minutes later. Two ties and two lead changes ensued until Kadeem Pantophlet hit a 3-pointer to put his team up 60-57 with nine minutes to play.
From there, Duquesne led until Khalif Wyatt of Temple drove in for a layup and converted a free throw with seconds left in the game. Wyatt finished the game with 35 points on 9 of 20 from the field.
On Duquesne’s last possession, Derrick Colter took the inbound pass, drove the length of the floor, and was fouled at the other end with 2.9 seconds left. He then converted his two free throws to seal the deal and break an 11-game losing streak. Colter finished with 17 points, second on the team behind Winters, who had 22. Andre Marhold, who was on the bench for a good portion of last week’s game against George Washington, had a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds.
Duquesne captured its second road win of the season with the victory. They will play host to Rhode Island at the A.J. Palumbo Center on Saturday.
