Bronx, N.Y.—The Rams matched their season-best point total as they beat the Duquesne Dukes 82-75. Fordham’s Chris Gaston had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Branden Frazier added 16 points and a career-high 13 assists.
Derrick Colter was the game’s 2nd leading scorer with 17 points, also recording 9 assists. Pantophlet had 13 and Johnson racked up 12, but it wasn’t enough to stay close to the Rams. Fordham was able to go into the locker room with a respectable halftime lead of 47-41. Duquesne never led in the 2nd half. They were able to get down to within five at one point in the 2nd half, but Gaston hit a jump shot and Bryan Smith knocked down a 3-pointer.
Duquesne’s loss came in spite of only committing 5 turnovers to Fordham’s 16. Wednesday night, it was shooting that killed the Dukes. Duquesne shot just 37.8 percent from the field, while Fordham hit 53.1 percent of its shots. The Rams (5-11, 1-0) host Massachusetts next. Duquesne (7-8, 0-1) plays Saint Joseph’s in the Palumbo Center on Saturday.
The loss will surely hurt Duquesne, as they are coming off losses to UL-Lafayette and Penn State. After losing to the lowest ranked team in the A-10, it will be interesting to see how they handle Saint Joseph’s.
