Duquesne (10-3) fell to Georgia Tech (10-3) 73-67 tonight at the McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta, struggling offensively in the loss.
Duquesne’s senior guard Micah Mason led the Dukes with 17 points, netting 5-of-10 shots from behind the arc. Sophomore forward Eric James, who replaced senior forward Jeremiah Jones in the starting lineup, added 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Dukes. Jones tore his left ACL in the first half of the Robert Morris contest, ending the team captain’s season.
The Yellow Jackets held senior guard Derrick Colter, who led the Dukes in scoring 18.6 ppg entering the game, to 9 points.
Senior guard Marcus Georges-Hunt led Georgia Tech and the court with 20 points and fellow senior guard Adam Smith added 17.
The Dukes opened on a 26-17 lead by making 6-of-9 of their first shots. The Yellow Jackets responded with outrebounding Duquesne 44-39 and holding the Dukes to 39.1 percent.
“In the end, I thought they wore us down,” Duquesne head coach Jim Ferry said, according to Georgia Tech’s athletic website. “[It was] a pretty even basketball game, and we were getting stops. We got a little fatigued offensively…and that’s a credit to them.”
Ferry said his team has yet to find a solution to Jones’ absence on the court as they begin conference play.
“Now it’s about the league and that’s what we focus on,” Ferry said. “Having to deal with Jeremiah [Jones]’ injury this late puts us in a situation that we’ve got to figure things out, but we will. Our focus right now is just trying to get better every single day.”
Duquesne hosts Dayton (9-2) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Palumbo Center.
