Duquesne (7-2) is now off to its best start in 36 years with an 89-70 home win this evening over UMBC (2-8), led by L.G. Gill’s career-high 22 points.
The junior forward also added career highs in grabbing 10 rebounds and hitting six 3-pointers. Senior forward Jeremiah Jones scored a career-high 20 points.
Senior guard Derrick Colter contributed 19 points, including five 3-pointers, and nine assists and senior guard Micah Mason added 13 points and seven assists.
Freshman guard Joe Sherburne led UMBC and the court with 25 points, including six 3-pointers.
The Dukes shot 53.1 percent, including 16-of-31 from the arc.
Jones said his team wanted redemption from last Friday night’s 96-75 loss to Pitt in the 84th annual City Game.
“We took it upon ourselves to come out tonight and just be aggressive and try to help our team win,” Jones said.
Head coach Jim Ferry said he challenged his team to bounce back from the Pitt loss, particularly defensively.
“To see these guys come out with great focus and great aggressiveness I thought was good for us,” Ferry said.
Gill said his goal for the season is consistency.
“The main thing is just keeping confidence, stepping into the shot and seeing the ball go in,” Gill said.
Duquesne travels to Johnstown, Pa. to face Saint Francis (3-4) at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Cambria County War Memorial.
