Duquesne ended the regular season on a high note, after taking down George Mason on the road, 81-69. With the win, Duquesne will get the No. 10 seed in the Atlantic 10 conference tournament, surpassing the play-in round. The Dukes will face Richmond, the No. 7 seed in the first round.
Derrick Colter hit his career high in 3-pointers, hitting five on the way to a 21 point night. But Colter’s high-scoring night wasn’t a game high. That title belonged to Sherrod Wright of George Mason, who scored 25 on 7 of 16 from the field. For Duquesne, Ovie Soko finished with 18 and Micah Mason had 11. The nation’s most efficient 3-point shooter was 1 of 2 from beyond the arc. L.G. Gill came off the bench to score 16 points and hit four 3-pointers.
The game featured five ties and eight lead changes, but Duquesne started to break the game open right before halftime. During this two-minute span, Gill hit three 3-pointers. With 14:29 to go, Gill hit his fourth 3-pointer to give Duquesne its largest lead, at 54-36.
George Mason would cut the lead to six points later in the game, but Duquesne went on a 7-0 run, capped by a Mason layup with 2:06 to go that mostly sealed the deal for the Patriots (11-19, 4-12).
Duquesne won the rebounding battle 42-27, while shooting over sixty percent from 3-point range in the second half.
The Dukes, 2-1 in their last three contests, are playing some of their best basketball all season. They are poised to make a run in the tournament and are set to leave for Brooklyn on Tuesday.
