In defeating Penn State (2-1) 78-52 tonight, Duquesne (3-0) shot .500 from both the field and three-point line.
Duquesne’s 26-point victory margin was its largest in series history. The Dukes also tied the school record with 17 3-pointers in a single contest.
Derrick Colter led the way for the Dukes and tied his career-high with 26 points, making 6 of 9 three-point attempts. The senior guard also had 4 assists on the night.
Colter credited his teammates for his offensive performance.
“It’s all about my team. I’m not a one-man show,” Colter said. “I give respect to all my teammates. They help me out and I was feeling good today and making my shots.”
Micah Mason added 14 points and assisted on 7 baskets. Jeremiah Jones contributed 11 points and L.G. Gill added 9 points.
Freshman forward Nakye Sanders led the court with 10 rebounds.
“I have confidence in every each and last one of my teammates,” Jones said. “I always have and I think it’s going to be a special year.”
Penn State’s senior forward Brandon Taylor led the Nittany Lions with 14 points.
Mason’s two 3-pointers within the first 1:17 of play started the Dukes with a 6-0 lead. Penn State then rallied on a 7-0 run. The lead changed 10 times within the first half, ending in a 37-26 Duquesne lead at halftime.
The Dukes led by at least 20 points for the final 15 minutes, according to goduquesne.com.
Ferry said his team played unselfishly on both offense and defense.
“We defended as a unit,” Ferry said. “Guys were really there for each other. I really felt like we frustrated [Penn State] a little bit because of how consistent we were defensively, taking away their space to play.”
Ferry commented on his team’s strong offense.
“We’re not trying to fire 30 threes a game but if that’s what’s going to show, then we have the ability to take them,” Ferry said. “More importantly, we have the ability to make them.”
As part of the Gulf Coast Showcase, Duquesne plays Pepperdine (1-2) on Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Germain Arena in the first of three games in three days.
