Duquesne (16-15, 6-12) defeated Saint Joseph’s (24-7, 13-5) 78-70 this afternoon in front of a sellout senior day crowd at Hagan Arena.
Senior guard Micah Mason led the Dukes and court in scoring 28 points. Senior guard Derrick Colter fell two rebounds shy of a triple-double with 18 points, 8 rebounds and 11 assists.
Senior forward Isaiah Miles led the Hawks with 21 points.
The Dukes snapped an eight-game losing streak in posting the school’s third win in 23 all-time games at Saint Joseph’s.
Duquesne took its first lead on an L.G. Gill 3-pointer with 11:10 remaining in the first half and never trailed from that point on. Saint Joseph’s tied the game twice in the first half and once in the second but failed to take control of the game.
The Dukes, who shot 50 percent, held the Hawks to 34.7 percent shooting and outrebounded them 47-39.
Tonight’s victory clinched Duquesne’s first winning regular season under head coach Jim Ferry. The 2011-12 season marked the team’s last winning regular season.
Mason and Colter both set records on the night, with Mason breaking the school record for three’s in a season with his 100th and Colter joining Norm Nixon (1,805/577) as the only other player in school history with over 1,600 points and 500 assists.
The Dukes head to Brooklyn for the Atlantic 10 Championship. The tournament bracket will be released following the conclusion of Saturday’s games.
