The Duquesne Dukes are a young team with a lot of upside but there’s still a lot to be learned following their first loss of the season, an 84-81 setback to NJIT.
Duquesne (2-1) struggled defensively throughout the game in an effort coach Jim Ferry called out in his post game presser, “it was one of the worst defensive efforts I’ve seen out of one of my teams.”
Damon Lynn poured in 27 points for NJIT (2-4) including six of eleven from the three point arc. Ky Howard added 16 points and Winfield Willis had 13 points. The Highlanders shot 56.9% for the game, 62% in the second half as they frustrated the Dukes all game long.
Duquesne’s Micah Mason hit a career high six three-pointers for a team high 18 points in defeat. Jordan Stevens had 16 points for the Dukes and TySean Powell and Derrick Colter each had 14 points.
Ferry was very adamant not to take credit away from NJIT’s effort, “We were outplayed by a hungrier team than us. It was a bad loss for us, not because of the opponent we played, but the way we played.”
Duquesne will host Howard Tuesday night at 7 PM at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
