The Duquesne football team is grieving the loss of one of their players after starting safety Chris Johnson has passed away at the age of 22.
According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Johnson was found dead inside a car in Churchill on Friday morning. The medical examiner has ruled the death a suicide.
Johnson, a transfer from Florida, finished his senior season this past year and tied for fifth on the team with 55 tackles. He recorded 104 total tackles and two interceptions in his two season for the Dukes.
He played in 26 games for the Gators, including the Sugar and Gator bowls, primarily as a special teams player.
Nicknamed “Juice” because of his speed, he was a Rivals three-star safety for Trinity Catholic High School in Florida and helped his team win a state championship in 2010. Johnson was also a part of Trinity’s state champion 4X100 Relay team in track.
Duquesne University head football coach Jerry Schmitt issued the following statement:
“Everyone associated with the Duquesne football program is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Chris. Chris was a passionate football player who was also a great teammate, who was loved by many. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Chris’ family at this difficult time.”
