The near-flawless Richmond Spiders (18-13, 8-8) opened up a large gap on Duquesne (8-22, 1-15) in the opening half en route to a 24-point victory at Robins Center. Richmond only committed one turnover while recording 13 assists in the first 20 minutes of play.
In addition to taking care of the basketball, six different Richmond players made 3-point field goals to open up a 32-18 lead. Richmond hit eight 3-pointers in all during the first half and went into the locker room with a 42-26 lead over the Dukes.
Derrick Colter for Duquesne had a game-high 18 points, while Quevyn Winters had 12. Colter is now officially the fifth player in Duquesne history to lead the team in points and assists. He was also the first underclassman to do so. Winters finished the season with the second most 3-pointers scored by a Duquesne freshman.
Richmond defended the 3-point arc well throughout the game, only allowing Duquesne to shoot 8 of 21 (39.4 percent). The win was Richmond’s eighth in a row over Duquesne at home. The beginning of the second half mirrored the first, as Richmond opened with a 12-4 run. The Spiders stretched the lead out to 36 before Duquesne went on a 14-0 run, but couldn’t get any closer than 22 for the rest of the game.
Richmond shot 57.1 percent in the second half and 51.7 percent for the game. Terry Allen led Richmond in scoring with 17 points, while Darien Brothers had 14.
Duquesne did not finish the regular season as a top twelve team in the Atlantic 10, so they will not be playing in the conference tournament at the Barclays Center.
