Duquesne traveled to the Smith Center in Washington, D.C. Wednesday night to take on George Washington in a conference matchup that featured two teams coming off a loss. Duquesne (10-11, 2-6) added their second straight loss, while George Washington improved their record to 18-4 overall.
Dominique McKoy led three Duquesne scorers in double figures, with 14 points, while Ovie Soko had 13 and Micah Mason added 11.
George Washington, who moved to 11-0 on the season, was aided by 17 points from Patricio Garino and a high-flying double-double from Isaiah Armwood. The senior Armwood had 14 points and 11 rebounds, his second dominant performance in a row, after leading his team in a losing effort against Dayton last Saturday.
In a single burst of scoring from George Washington midway through the first half, Duquesne added just one field goal – that span encompassed seven minutes and built for the home team a significant first half lead. The Colonials hit four consecutive 3-pointers en route to a 28-10 lead with 8:47 left in the first half.
Mason brought the Dukes back into the game before the half, scoring all 11 of his points in the final 6:07 of the first half. His 3-pointer with 4.3 seconds left made it 36-30 at the half – but Duquesne wouldn’t be able to build on their momentum heading into the locker room.
But the story of the night for Duquesne was inconsistencies in scoring. The visitors trailed by just seven with 9:50 remaining, until they went stone cold from the field and the free throw line. They missed five consecutive shots and four free throw attempts over the next several minutes, over which the Colonials built the lead to 15 points.
Duquesne faces George Mason at home this Saturday at 2 PM. The Patriots (7-14) rank 13th in the Atlantic 10. They came close to beating Saint Louis last weekend, but lost to Dayton 84-67 earlier in the week.
