After two losses to start the 2014 season, the Duquesne Dukes were able to use the big play to break loose and get their first win of the season at Rooney Field Saturday afternoon, easily handling the Dayton Flyers by a final score of 33-13.
The Dukes were paced by three touchdowns over 50 yards, one in each phase of the game. Holding a 9-6 lead in the second quarter, the Dukes first long TD came from the defense on a 75-yard interception return by Malik Shegog that would stretch the lead to 16-6.
Less than a minute and a half later, the Dukes would get a huge special teams play from standout return man Devin Rahming, as he was able to take a Flyers punt and return it 84 yards for another TD, giving Duquesne a 23-6 advantage.
Dayton was able to open up second half scoring with their lone touchdown of the game, as Connor Kacsor capped off a 10-play drive with a seven yard touchdown scamper to cut the Dukes lead to 23-13.
However, the Dukes wasted little time responding to the Flyers, as Dillon Buechel was able to find Noel Oduho for a 58-yard touchdown strike for a 30-13 advantage.
Buechel, a sophomore quarterback from Montour, paced the Dukes with 218 yards passing, while WVU transfer Chavas Rawlins led the Dukes with five catches. On defense, Austin Whalen led the Dukes with two sacks and added four tackles.
After three non-conference games to start the season, the Dukes will open up their conference schedule next Saturday at Rooney field against Monmouth. Kickoff is slated for 12 PM.
