After a slow start to the season facing some very tough competition, the Duquesne Dukes Women’s Basketball team picked things up over the weekend, bringing home the championship of the 2014 Ball State Federal Credit Union Thanksgiving Classic after an 82-62 victory over the host Cardinals on Sunday afternoon.
April Robinson was named the tournament’s MVP and Deva’Nyar Workman to the All-Tournament team that saw Duquesne also defeat Jackson State.
Robinson set a career-high with 22 points in Saturday’s 90-72 win over Jackson State, also chipped in 11 points and three assists in the championship game on Sunday. Workman scored 13 points against JSU, and 16 points on Sunday, making 5-of-7 shots from the floor.
But it wasn’t just Robinson and Workman as the Dukes showed their quality depth.
Belma Nurkic scored 19 points off the bench, including a game-high four 3-pointers. Amadea Szamosi scored 12 points to go along with seven rebounds, while Robinson and Olivia Bresnahan each had a team-best five assists.
The Dukes shot a season-best 53.6 percent, making 30-of-56 shots and drained a season-high 10 3-pointers. Just as impressive was the effort Duquesne showed on the defensive end of the floor, limiting Ball State to only 36.7 percent from the floor (22-of-60).
Duquesne will be back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 3rd against Kent State (1-5) at home. Tipoff is at 11:00 a.m.
