The 2015-16 season was a magical one for the Duquesne Women’s basketball team.
Unfortunately it all came to an end Monday night in a 97-51 loss to No. 1 U Conn in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Breanna Stewart scored 21 points and tied her career-high with 16 rebounds. Moriah Jefferson hit a career-high six three-pointers to score 20 points. And Morgan Tuck had 20 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
Duquesne hung around with the best team in the land for one quarter, but U Conn blew the game open with a huge second quarter.
April Robinson opened the second quarter with a three-point shot that pulled Duquesne within 20-17, but the Huskies took off after that and took a 42-21 lead into the locker room.
The Huskies defense was the biggest factor as they held the Dukes to just 29.2 percent from the floor. U Conn also outrebounded the Dukes 51-31 on the night.
Scoring in the paint was also a big factor in the Huskies victory as U Conn held a 50-18 adavantage.
The Huskies have won 117 of their last 118 games and 108 in a row against unranked teams. That streak also includes a current run of 71 straight for UConn, the second-longest winning streak in the history of NCAA Division I women’s basketball. The longest is the 90-game run the Huskies ran from 2008-11.
Deva’Nyar Workman scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half and April Robinson added 16 points for Duquesne (28-6), which was playing in its first NCAA Tournament.
